Hi Dalton,
ReplyDeleteI read some of the Darren Shan books a few years ago: I remember thinking it was a downhill journey, and didn't get to the end of the series. However, fiction can be a useful source of ideas to help with creating atmosphere or environments for games you are working on.
Lots of students seem to be newspaper-averse, but you might be surprised at how much relevant, useful and interesting material is contained in a "quality" (broadsheet) newspaper like The Guardian (ironically, it used to have the reputation of being a "student's newspaper"). The Guardian includes extensive coverage of games-related matters: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/games.
There is a good collection of board games (and some card games) in the cupboards in the ganes labs, so you will be able to explore the mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics of some great non-digital game-systems.
